EMBEDDED PROJECTS WITH ABSTRACTS (Wireless Technologies - GSM/GPRS/GPS/ZigBee)

1. Design and Implementation of Vehicle Tracking System Using GPS/GSM/GPRS Technology and Smartphone Application - 2014

An efficient vehicle tracking system is designed and implemented for tracking the movement of any equipped vehicle from any location at any time. The proposed system made good use of a popular technology that combines a Smartphone application with a microcontroller. This will be easy to make and inexpensive compared to others. The designed in-vehicle device works using Global Positioning System (GPS) and Global system for mobile communication / General Packet Radio Service (GSM/GPRS) technology that is one of the most common ways for vehicle tracking. The device is embedded inside a vehicle whose position is to be determined and tracked in real-time. A microcontroller is used to control the GPS and GSM/GPRS modules. The vehicle tracking system uses the GPS module to get geographic coordinates at regular time intervals. The GSM/GPRS module is used to transmit and update the vehicle location to a database. A Smartphone application is also developed for continuously monitoring the vehicle location. The Google Maps API is used to display the vehicle on the map in the Smartphone application. Thus, users will be able to continuously monitor a moving vehicle on demand using the Smartphone application and determine the estimated distance and time for the vehicle to arrive at a given destination. In order to show the feasibility and effectiveness of the system, this paper presents experimental results of the vehicle tracking system and some experiences on practical implementations.

4. Long Range Image radio transmitter -  2013

Slow scan television (SSTV) image transmission system is used by many decades by radio amateurs.   There are numerous modes, some for B/W others for color images. We choose the Robot36 mode because it is transmitting color images and because is widely used. Usually this requires a PC to capture and process the data to get the audio signal necessary for transmission. In recent years the development of low cost embedded platforms open the possibility to replace the large PC with a small ARM boards to do all the video capture and single processing. In this case we used on of the cheapest model: Raspberry PI. For signal modulation and radio transmission, a miniature solution was developed using parts commercially available. The transmitter runs on 433.8MHz, output power 1.5W, and uses narrow band FM modulation, as the SSTV standard requires. Because of the small size relative to dissipate power, heat dissipation was carefully investigated. On the image was overlaid the data taken from GPS as an “on screen display” (OSD).

5. Implementation of Children Tracking System on Android Mobile Terminals – 2013

Recently, all over the world, crime against children is increasing at higher rates and it is high time to offer safety support system for the children going to schools. This paper focuses on implementing children tracking system for every child attending school. However the existing systems are not powerful enough to prevent the crime against children since these systems give information about the children group and not about each child resulting in low assurance about their child safety to parents and also does not concentrate on sensing the cry of the child and intimating the same to its parents. The proposed system includes a child module and two receiver modules for getting the information about the missed child on periodical basis. The child module includes ARM7 microcontroller (LPC 2378), Global positioning system (GPS), Global system for mobile communication (GSM), Voice playback circuit and the receiver module includes Android mobile device in parent’s hand and the other as monitoring database in control room of the school. Finally, implementation results for the proposed system are provided in this paper.

6. Design of Intelligent Ambulance and Traffic Control – 2013

This paper represents the unique feature which is very useful to ambulance drivers to take an alternate route in case of congestion. The various performance evaluation criteria are average waiting time, average distance traveled by vehicles, switching frequency of green light at a junction, efficient emergency mode operation and satisfactory operation of SMS using GSM Mobile. The performance of the Intelligent Traffic Light Controller is compared with the Fixed Mode Traffic Light Controller. It is observed that the proposed Intelligent Traffic Light Controller is more efficient than the conventional controller in respect of less waiting time, more distance traveled by average vehicles and efficient operation during emergency mode and GSM interface. Moreover, the designed system has simple architecture, fast response time, user friendliness and scope for further expansion.

7. Automated Irrigation System Using a Wireless Sensor Network and GPRS Module – 2014

An automated irrigation system was developed to optimize water use for agricultural crops. The system has a distributed wireless network of soil-moisture and temperature sensors placed in the root zone of the plants. In addition, a gateway unit handles sensor information, triggers actuators, and transmits data to a web application. An algorithm was developed with threshold values of temperature and soil moisture that was programmed into a microcontroller-based gateway to control water quantity. The system was powered by photovoltaic panels and had a duplex communication link based on a cellular-Internet interface that allowed for data inspection and irrigation scheduling to be programmed through a web page. The automated system was tested in a sage crop field for 136 days and water savings of up to 90% compared with traditional irrigation practices of the agricultural zone were achieved. Three replicas of the automated system have been used successfully in other places for 18 months. Because of its energy autonomy and low cost, the system has the potential to be useful in water limited geographically isolated areas.

8. Application of Data Acquisition System for Superconducting Quantum Interface Devices (SQUID) at Remote Location – 2014

Together with technological developments related to the specific area, the scope of remote data acquisition systems has become widened. The usages of these kinds of systems prevent waste of time and labor. Therefore, in this work, the introduction and design of a data acquisition system that can sense and send the output of Superconducting Quantum Interface Devices (SQUID) to main lab via wireless with GPRS is aimed to be provided.
The system of this design uses FPGA and MCU together within the processes of collecting, packing and sending data. In this design, XILINX Spartan 3AN is used as a FPGA, ST Microelectronics ARM Cortex-M4 used as a MCU. The main purpose of FPGA is collecting analog data with using ADC and packing them in order. On the other hand, the main purpose of MCU is to send packed data through the GPRS. The processing load of MCU is decreased by using FSMC (Flexible static memory controller) of it while getting data from FPGA; also with parallel connection data transfer rate is increased. Also by using FSMC, first time 200Hz data collecting will actualized through the remote data acquisition systems based on GPRS.

14. A Cloud Network-based Power Management Technology for Smart Home Systems – 2012

As our world is suffering energy crisis on oil and natural resources shortages, how to make efficient use of limited power energy has remained a major problem to be conquered so far. Aimed to facilitate the life of human being as well as to use the limited power energy more efficiently, we propose in this paper a technology that can perform remote control and monitoring of electrical appliances on the Internet. To do this, an intelligent power socket (IPS) module that is able to control and monitoring the power of electricity is realized in this research. The IPS modules are placed in conjunction with the electrical appliances that are to be controlled from a far-end place. In addition, an embedded system based home gateway that can be connected with the Internet is set up in which the electrical appliances are located. Moreover, the acquired power consumption information or the status of the appliances is stored in a database server in the Cloud. With the proposed structure, authorized users or system managers can log into the web server which is connected with the database, monitoring the power status and take actions on the appliances remotely. The control command from the far-end place, i.e., from the web server on the Internet, is first sent to the home gateway and then transmitted to the IPS modules through the Zigbee wireless communication protocol so that the remote control of appliances can be achieved. The proposed architecture can be easily applied to any kind of room space. Moreover, only a browser is needed for the client to communicate with the web server, no other application program is required. As the browser is now available almost on every information technology products, e.g., a notebook or a smart phone, the proposed architecture has been shown to be very convenient and useful for remote control and monitoring of electrical appliances, and hence can facilitate the life of human beings.
